There are places that are not merely visited, but lived in memory. In the heart of Greenwich Village, along Eighth Street and just steps from Fifth Avenue, lies a place that has accompanied my journey for two decades.

Hay lugares que no solo se visitan, sino que se viven en la memoria. En el corazón de Greenwich Village, sobre la calle 8, a pocos pasos de la Quinta Ave., se encuentra un lugar que ha acompañado mi recorrido durante dos décadas.
Beside the space where EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO now stands, a story was born—one that links nations, projects a legacy of authentic leadership, and strengthens the sense of belonging. I first became acquainted with this place in February 2006—at the height of the New York winter—when I initiated the centennial commemorations of the international leader Galo Plaza, who was born at 5 West Eighth Street in Manhattan, just steps from EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO, located at 11 West on the same street.
Junto al espacio donde hoy funciona EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO nació una historia que enlaza naciones, proyecta un legado de auténtico liderazgo y fortalece el sentido de pertenencia. Conocí este lugar por primera vez en febrero de 2006 —en pleno invierno neoyorquino— cuando inicié las conmemoraciones del centenario del líder internacional Galo Plaza, nacido en el 5 West de la calle ocho en Manhattan, a pocos pasos de EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO, ubicado en el 11 West de la misma calle.
A WARM AND GENEROUS REFUGE / UN REFUGIO ACOGEDOR Y GENEROSO
There was nowhere to take shelter from the cold, as the old Marlton Hotel was functioning as a student residence and there was no possibility of accessing the building. It was the Greek owners of what was then EVA’S who opened their doors to me, allowing me to gather my guests there before each brief ceremony held in front of the commemorative plaque. In February 2012, demolition began in order to reactivate the Marlton Hotel, where Galo Plaza was born.
From that first gesture of hospitality, EVA’S became a refuge, a meeting point, and a silent witness to the work of the Galo Plaza International Committee, of which I am the founder.
No había dónde guarecerse del frío ya que el antiguo Hotel Marlton funcionaba como residencia estudiantil y no había ninguna posibilidad de acceso al edificio. Fueron los propietarios griegos del entonces EVA'S, quienes me abrieron sus puertas para convocar ahí a mis invitados antes de cada breve ceremonia frente a la placa conmemorativa. En febrero de 2012 inició la demolición para reactivar el Hotel Marlton, donde nació Galo Plaza.
Desde aquel primer gesto de hospitalidad, EVA'S se convirtió en un refugio, un punto de encuentro y un testigo silencioso del trabajo del Comité Internacional Galo Plaza, del cual soy fundadora.
NEW BRAND SAME HOSPITALITY / NUEVA MARCA LA MISMA HOSPITALIDAD
As time went by, EVA'S too had to reinvent itself. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, it partnered with the CINCO DE MAYO chain in order to survive and be reborn. This is how EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO came into being—an establishment that today celebrates Mexican culinary tradition in New York and that, for me, preserves its essence intact: warmth, resilience, and the ability to bring stories together. This beloved place has six sisters—six additional locations—each with its own character, its own rhythm and history, and its own way of honoring authentic Mexican cuisine.
Con el paso del tiempo, este lugar también tuvo que reinventarse. En 2020, en medio de la pandemia, se asoció con la cadena CINCO DE MAYO para sobrevivir y renacer. Así nació EVA'S X CINCO DE MAYO, un espacio que hoy celebra la tradición culinaria mexicana en Nueva York y que, para mí, conserva intacta su esencia: la calidez, la resiliencia y la capacidad de unir historias. Este sitio tan querido tiene seis hermanas, seis sucursales adicionales, y cada una guarda su propio carácter, su propio ritmo e historia y su propia manera de honrar la cocina auténtica mexicana.

EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO offers a selection of beloved Mediterranean dishes that have been part of the community since the opening of EVA’S in 1978, along with a variety of flavorful, authentic Mexican dishes from the renowned CINCO DE MAYO chain, which has a presence in several boroughs of the city.
Today, EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO is a space that blends Mexican culinary tradition with the bohemian and cultural spirit of the Village. This restaurant serves as a privileged starting point for exploring some of New York’s most emblematic sites.
EVA'S X CINCO DE MAYO, ofrece una selección de queridos platos mediterráneos aficados en la comunidad desde la apertura de EVA'S en 1978 y una selección de sabrosos platos auténticos mexicanos de la famosa cadena CINCO DE MAYO, con presencia en varios condados de la ciudad.
Actualmente EVA'S X CINCO DE MAYO es un espacio que combina la tradición culinaria mexicana con el espíritu bohemio y cultural del Village. Este restaurante es un punto de partida privilegiado para recorrer algunos de los sitios más emblemáticos de Nueva York.

Mi Comité Internacional Galo Plaza, es una entidad dedicada exclusivamente a promover la historia, educación, artes y cultura, a rescatar los elevados ideales del líder internacional Galo Plaza, promotor de la unidad continental, la hermandad internacional, el progreso, los valores democráticos y la respetuosa y civilizada libertad de expresión.
Porque hay espacios que se vuelven parte de nuestra historia y este es uno de ellos.
A neighborhood rich in history
From EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO, it takes only a one‑block walk south to reach the majestic Washington Arch in Washington Square Park, the epicenter of the neighborhood’s university and artistic life.
Walking west along the same Eighth Street from EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO, the iconic Jefferson Market Building rises—a true architectural jewel that once served as a courthouse and is now a national historic landmark.
Two blocks further west from stands the historic Stonewall Inn, a global symbol of the LGBTQ+ rights movement; and just across from it, one finds the preserved site where Thomas Paine lived, author of Common Sense and a key figure in the political history of the United States.
The Village holds even more treasures just steps from EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO: MacDougal Street, with its legacy of literary cafés and music clubs where Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and so many others emerged; the New York Studio School, once home to the legendary Whitney Museum; the Salmagundi Club, one of the oldest artistic institutions in the United States; the Judson Memorial Church building, a center of activism and experimental art since the twentieth century; the Minetta Lane Theatre, a landmark of New York’s independent theater scene; and the home of Emma Lazarus, author of the poem inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

Desde EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO, basta caminar una cuadra hacia el sur para llegar al majestuoso Arco de Washington en Washington Square Park, epicentro de la vida universitaria y artística del barrio. Caminando sobre la misma calle 8 desde EVA'S X CINCO DE MAYO hacia el oeste, se alza el icónico Jefferson Market Building, una joya arquitectónica que alguna vez funcionó como tribunal y hoy es un sitio histórico nacional.
Dos cuadras hacia el oeste de EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO se encuentra también el histórico Stonewall Inn, símbolo mundial del movimiento por los derechos LGBTQ+ y cruzando desde ahí, se conserva el lugar donde vivió Thomas Paine, autor de Common Sense y figura clave en la historia política de Estados Unidos.
El Village guarda aún más tesoros a pasos de EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO: MacDougal Street, con su legado de cafés literarios y clubes de música donde surgieron Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix y tantos otros; El New York Studio School, antiguo hogar del legendario Whitney Museum; El Club Salmagundi, una de las instituciones artísticas más antiguas de Estados Unidos; El edificio de la Judson Memorial Church, centro de activismo y arte experimental desde el siglo XX; El Minetta Lane Theatre, un referente del teatro independiente neoyorquino; La casa de Emma Lazarus, autora del poema del pedestal de la Estatua de la Libertad.

En este entorno cargado de historia, cultura y memoria, EVA’S X CINCO DE MAYO se integra como un punto de encuentro cálido y auténtico, donde la gastronomía mexicana dialoga con el espíritu libre del Village. Es un lugar que pertenece al barrio y, al mismo tiempo, guarda para ti un significado profundamente personal.
Como desde hace 20 años, el Comité Internacional Galo Plaza continuará su labor ofreciendo CHARLAS DE HISTORIA Y CAMINATAS GRATUITAS en el barrio de nacimiento de Galo Plaza, teniendo como punto de referencia EVA'S X CINCO DE MAYO.
