CINCO DE MAYO en Washington Ave. es un lugar especial del Bronx, donde se entrelaza seguridad, vida académica y la memoria de un barrio desde donde se llega a lugares emblemáticos de Nueva York y del mundo.
Located in the heart of Melrose at 837 Washington Ave., since its opening on February 19, 2015, CINCO DE MAYO BX has been the epicenter of a vibrant area where the Bronx’s history blends with community life, academia, sports, and tourism.
CINCO DE MAYO BX reflects the living history of the borough, rooted in Melrose, a neighborhood whose name comes from the Melrose Estate, a 19th‑century property named after Melrose Abbey in Scotland. The area later developed on lands once owned by the influential Morris family, whose presence shaped much of the early Bronx. That layered legacy remains present in the identity of the community, of which the restaurant has been a part for more than a decade.

CINCO DE MAYO BX refleja la historia viva del condado, arraigado en Melrose, un vecindario cuyo nombre proviene de la Melrose Estate, una propiedad del siglo XIX nombrada en honor a la abadía escocesa Melrose Abbey. La zona se desarrolló posteriormente en tierras que pertenecieron a la influyente familia Morris, cuya presencia marcó la historia temprana del Bronx. Since its founding in 2015, Don Elías Ballinas—an entrepreneur from Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla—has sought to share the authentic flavors he grew up with: an honest cuisine prepared with fresh, high‑quality ingredients, true to his motto of authenticity and flavor.
CINCO DE MAYO BX was born with a spirit of community. During its first days of opening in 2015, it offered its exquisite tacos free of charge as a gesture of welcome and gratitude to the neighborhood that saw it begin, and during the Covid pandemic it became a favorite throughout the area.
Eleven years later, that first gesture remains part of its identity: a business that grew alongside its people and has become woven into the everyday history of Melrose.
Desde su fundación en 2015, don Elías Ballinas, empresario originario de Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla, quiso compartir los sabores auténticos con los que creció: una cocina honesta, preparada con productos frescos y de alta calidad, fiel a su lema de autenticidad y sabor. CINCO DE MAYO BX nació con espíritu de comunidad.
Durante sus primeros días de apertura en 2015, compartió gratuitamente sus exquisitos tacos como gesto de bienvenida y agradecimiento al barrio que lo vio nacer y durante la pandemia del Covid se convirtió en un favorito de toda la zona.
Once años después, ese acto inicial sigue siendo parte de su identidad: un emprendimiento que creció junto a la gente y que forma parte de la historia cotidiana de Melrose.
The team that sustains CINCO DE MAYO BX is also part of its history: leading the daily operation is Marlon Hernández, its general manager, originally from El Salvador, whose dedication, care, and skill have enriched the restaurant’s identity and strengthened its commitment to warm, respectful service rooted in the community.
From this shared sense of belonging to the neighborhood and its people emerged dishes that have become local favorites, such as the emblematic Bronx Quesadilla Burger, created right here, which—alongside the birria and the quesadilla—stands among the most beloved offerings.
El equipo que sostiene CINCO DE MAYO BX, también forma parte de su historia: al frente de la operación diaria está Marlon Hernández, su manager general, originario de El Salvador, cuya dedicación, esmero y destrezas han enriquecido la identidad del lugar y fortalecido su compromiso con un servicio cálido, respetuoso y cercano a la comunidad.
De la visión de pertenencia al barrio y la comunidad, nacieron platos que actualmente son los favoritos, como la emblemática Bronx Quesadilla Burger, creada aquí mismo que junto a la birria y la quesadilla son de las favoritas.

CINCO DE MAYO BX is located beside the 42nd Police Precinct, and just a few steps away stands Boricua College, an academic institution that brings movement, stability, and cultural life to the area. Its programs in Human Services, Education, and Liberal Arts—offered through a bilingual, community‑oriented model—attract students and faculty throughout the day, reinforcing the active, safe, and diverse environment that surrounds CINCO DE MAYO BX.
